    American Good/Bad

At dive this morning my dive master asked me how was my mortage.  Asked if I was responsible for his recesion.  lol, then his mate, a British guy statred railing off facts of how Amereica was the the worst in the world.  Heatlh care, literticay, etc.   I asked where he was getting his info and he said Micheal Moore.  Ugg.  Just goes to show what a dope, a camera, and a rant can do to fuel a negative image world wide.  Thanks a bunch Mr. Moore.

Just got back from the wet market.  Pick out fresh seafood so to speak.  Guy at stand assued us lobster was fresh and just died.  Got more praws, lilies and Lapu Lapu.  Girl next to Jing buying Lillies sold me on clams.  I thanked her in talgalog and she grabbed a handfull more and threw them in.  Now to restaurant to cook our food.   Owner was nice, asked how each should be cooked.  When they got to the lobster the stopped.  He asked his waitress to smell it. She shook her head.  Then would not sever us it.  Told us to take it back.  I did and Jing followewd.  We said the restaurant would not cook it and we needed fresh lobster.  The guy smirked and swaped it right off.  The owner looked at the new lobster and and said this is ok.  He could have just cooked his buddies crap but stood up for American tourist in his local restaurant and made sure we were taken care of.  Nice to see.  Better than what I'm reading in Kitchen Confindentail from American cooks.

    I don't look like Bordain.

The single girl we met left town.  She was a distant relative of the owner of the Mexican restaurant.  When she got home she recieved a text messgae from the owner saying  Anthony Bordain was in his restaurant reading his own book.  Who knows maybe he was there reading his book. :)  But sheesh, he is a half foot taller then me and 7 years older.

The couple left yesterday.  They are not a couple but just friends.  The guy works in Korean.  He pointed out to me that much of the people here that I thought were Japanese were Korean too.   He pointed out the Korean couples, they wear the same clothes as each other.  A trend in Korea I guess.   I didn't notice until he pointed it out.  Strange.

I was able to get my hair braided, well sort of.  There was a guy on the beach getting his done as we walked by.  He was getting all his haid twisted off in small sections and held in place with little rubber bands.   I toook my hat off and asked the girl if I had long enough hiar and she said I do.  Boo-ya!  Cleaned up the back to the hair braid place.  When I was getting my hair done she asked if I was an artist.   Why I do not know.  Maybe it was the bear can that was gluded to my hand?  :)  Jing says she thinks she meant actor casue I had on my superman shirt.  Anyway she asked if it was hurting but it really was not.  It just felt like all my head was being pulled back.  Like Ren from Ren and Stimpy when he gets petted.  Well later that night when sleeping is when the pain statred.  Could not rest my head directly on any of the sectioned off spots without an ouch.  Same with the shell ankle braclet Jing bought me.  Could not have to ankle directly on a shell.  Had to hand the foot off the bed  Jing said i was moving all night.   But I will keep the ouchy hiar for a bit more, the price of looking cool. :)

We have been slipping up a bit with food, doing the tourist all you can eat buffets on the beach. Last night asked the hiar braid girl where she eats.  So we went to the back alley by the wet market and found the restaurant she described.  Nobody in it.  Bad sign.  But next to it was a local restaurant the was crowed.  A good sign.  It was small and open air.  Had water lilly adobe, ground pork and potato over rice and beef bulalo.  Boo-ya again!  Scored twice in one night.  Going to try to bring back the bulalo recipe, watched how she was making it.   The marrow out tof the bone was amazing.  Went back for lunch today after diving.  The bartender from the Mexican restaurant was eating there and he works in a restaurant aboutu .5 miles away.  Tonight Jing wants to buy fish and seafood from the wet market and find some local place to cook it for us.

Got to dive today.  Contacts back in.  Could not go  on the wreck dive because it was 100 feet deep.  Too far down for my casual diving experience.  But I did get to dive a reef.  Not a great reef but good for $34 and Jing got to snorkel and practice swimming while I dove. Last day here.  Tomorrow off to Bali.  Now back to Sun and Sun screen.

    Even More Bits

One funny bit I forgot to mention the other night.  When I left the Dr. the 2nd time she put on an eye patch to keep the dust out.  It was gause with tape.  Well when going to bed that night we checked the eye and there was puss so we decided to go to the Dr. to be sure it was OK.  This time we took a tricycle.  The guy wanted a dollar but it only costs 50 cents.  Guy said the guy saw my eye and was over charging and would not pay him.  I told Jing my eye was worth th eextra 50 cents, let just pay on go this one time. :)

Now I'm waiting for Jing to get ready for dinner.  Typical day here starts aroud 9:30.  Get up and slather on sun block over entire body.  Go to a beach bar and watch the last quarter of whichever conference final is on that day.  On a good day the Lakers lose and I get to see Kobe pout.   The back to the beach for some sun, reading.  Breakfest is usually a bag of fresh mangoes. Swim some and read more.  Usually have one activity per day.  Island hop, ATV to mountain top, sail boat ride, jet ski ride, etc.  Scuba will be last day when I get my contacts back.   Jing can snorkel while I Scuba.  After activity apply more Sun screen and swim more at beach.  Then clean up before some happy hours then choose an all you can it dinner place on the beach. The beach is littered with them.  One night will be lobster instead of all  you can eat. Then to club hopping before going back to the room and bed.

BTW, sorry for the reallty bad spelling throught the blog.  No time to look up stuff.

    Additional Boracay Bits

The other night Jing wanted Caiprinia that this Mexican restaurant advertised they had.  Which they did not because they used Rum.  This was like the only Mexican restaurant here and the 3 others in it turned out to Americans.  A girl form SF and a couple from Baltimore.  Nice people who we have been hanging out with having dinner and riding the banana boat with, ect.

Took a sail boat ride to watch the Sun set, a small canoe type boat to 3 foot net extensions like a catamoran.  We sat in the nets.  Saw a 5 star hotel and Manny Paqeowe's hotel.  He is everywhere here endorsing stuff on TV.

Could it have been carma that I got and eyelid infection because I joked about sterile Club Meds?    :)  Ya, but that is the point I think.  You want to try new and diffferent things sometimes it will not go right.  Suck it up and move on.   You might get scars on an adventure but then what is life without a few scars.  Want to go through life without trying some excitc dish becasue you might get sick?  Just don't be dumb about it.  Next time, let the itchy eye itch.

    Lose an eye

Went on a island hoping cruise 2 days ago.  Snokeling, going to remote beaches, etc.   Part of the way there my eye strating tingling.  Thought it was the salt water but wait, I have contacts, I don't open my eyes in the water.  Started to get worse, hmmm maybe something on the contact opr a ripped contact.  Cruise was cominbg to an end and they started dropping us off.   First stop was not ours but I did not want to wait.  Our place was about .25 miles away.  First, stop at the ATM to get money.  Jing says to wait to use the one by our place.  OK.   Get to the one by our place and out of order.   Go to our place and need to pay rent, but no money.   Go to room first and take out contact, it looks fine.  Look in eye, see no objects.  Put back contactand walk back to first atm, 2.  Get money, pick up saline and walk back to place, 3.  Take out contact for good.  Eye not feeling better.  Ask front desk for eye doctor.  Says there is one at the mall back by the ATM, 4.  Get there and it is an eye glasss store.  Grrr.  But there is a medical clinc a few more blocks down.   Get there and meet the Dr.  Sh is a young girl who looks like she should be braiding my hair on the beach.  Real nice though.  She flushes my eye like 20 times.  Gives in anti-bacterial eye drops and off we go back to room, 5.  Get to room and doc calls the place ands says she also wants to give me a steriod drop, so go back, 6 get drops then back to room, 7.   All these trips are ona little snad walkway teemed with slow moving tourists.  Very frustrating, MOVE PEOPLE! :)
Went back the next moring to check on the eye, a different Dr. is there.  He look at my eye and says I have an infection on my inner, upper eye lid and the eye is fine and it should be gone in 2 to 3 days.   2 days and the eye is about 95% better.  Saving this now becasue time is up.  More on some details later when I get more time.

To be clear, no problem with eye now.   Just need to use classes for a few days until I can go back on contacts.

    Boracay

8 minutes left so it will be quick and like the other posts today no proff reading.  Landed in Boracy last night.  Wow.  Rich Filipino, Japanese, and Australian tourest everywhere.
5$ got us an all you can eat dinner on the beach with Lumpia, Lechon, clams, oystrers, mussels.  Huge lobsters forsale everywhere.  Clear blue water.  This place is decadent and cheap.

    Dundee

Got a crocidlle Dundee hat for a souvineer.  Jing woare it to the airport then took it off.  So I put it on.  So I was walking around with the Dundee hat, a tank top, Sun burn and a beer.  I looked like the friend of Mick Dundee from the first movie, not Donk, the other guy.

Also, they took my passport number when we check landed.  They did not want Jing's when she gave them both passports they gave her's back and recorded mine.

    More More Random

Dogs, most time I try to pet dogs the run away.  Jing laughs and says they thinkn I'm going to kick them not pet them.  :(

Jing is my hoochie.  Lots of people look at me funny thinking Jing is my Filipino 'girlfriend'.  Lots of guys here for that but not as bad as Thailand.  Not just white guy though, there was a Chinese guy next door to us with his.  Or maybe she was really a Chinese Filipino. :P

    Towel

One item that is essential for travel is a beach towel.  Carry it on your flight back pack, it can be a blanket on an over airconditioned plane.  It can be a pillow for a long car ride.  It can be a towel when the hostel does not have one and of corse it will be a beach towel on the beach.  And the meaning of life is 42.

SW: Darth Bane: Rule of Two

Finished the first book.  Of course you need to read the first book as this is the 2nd in the series.  Spoiler Alert: Very good until tyhe end when all the cool Jedi get wipped out.  But this is a book about the Sith so I guess it should be expected.  Next up Kitchen Confidenial, thanks Elena.

    My Feet

My feet always swell up when I travel internationally, I lose my ankels for a day or two after.  BTW, if you are traveling I highly recommend getting a pair of Chacos, you can go days without taking them off sometimes.

    More Random Museings

In the airport for 3 hours so I'm writing on paperso I can remember things.  Airport lines go slow here, everyonetravels with cardboard boxes so they can bring as much as possible.  Guy behind us had chickens in two boxes.  Our bags however weighed too much and the girl made us stuff out to put on carry on.  I took out a book and some dirty laundry and that seemed to satisfy her.  Also the security lines through the airport are split by male and female.  Guess whiuch lines goes quicker?

Jing is bossy now that she is my wife. :)  She is funny too.  We take tricycles to get aroubd, a motorcycle with an expanded side car.   It cost about 10 to 20 cents per ride.  If the guy tries to charge more she will fight him tooth and nail.  If he asks for the appropiate amount she will give him a dollar anyway.

Bananas taste great here, so sweet.  Jing saythe bananas in the states have no flavor.  I would have called shanagains on her when she said that until I tasted one.

More about the cave.  Cool thing was there was grafitti on the wall from US soilders from right before WWII, 1940.  Also when you go through the tunnel they point out rock shapes that resemble things.  Look that one looks like Jesus, that one looks like Bart Simpson, that one looks like an ear of corn.

    Random thouhgts

Here are just some random thoughts to fill blog space for the 3 people reading this, one being Jing and the other my parents. :)

I have only been nervous 3 times in a car as best I can remember.  The 3rd was on the trip to Jing's parents village.  Her cousin was driving and he was passing on a blind curve.  Later I asked him about it and he said he didn't remember but I should have told him about it becasue he was getting sleepy.  Yikes.

Hum Bow (excuse the spelling) is servered here as fast food like a hamburger.  It is pretty good except the meat inside is like from the movie Meatballs, "some kind of meat".

When we woke up yesterday it was overcast but went we ventured out the Sun came out But I was lazy and did not put sun block on cause we were just walking.  Well my hat saved my face but my neck and arms now have farmers burn.  After we get back I'll put up the pics and the 3 readers can match pics to blog.  This one will be funny.

If I was ever on American Idol I would choose to sign The Velvet Undergroud's Sweet Jane.  Great Great under the radar song.

So far the vacation is pretty good...cheap beer, cheap and great local food, good book and fun exploring with Jing.   3 beaches in 2 days although not great beaches.

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park

Went to the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park today.  It was a 2 hour ride each way, up at 5 again.  It is suppose to an 8 KM river (I have know idea how long that is, Im American and think in miles) and you get to go in about half a mile.  Then you get to eat a local lunch in the village by it, pretty cool.

Tomorrow we are off to Baracay so up early again.   Rain again here so lets hope Baracay is sunny.
    May 20

    Let's play hearts

In Palawan.  Rain.  All day the first day.   Locals say the rainy season has come early.  Oh well.   We got to get a local soup similar to Pho and our place is really nice for hostel standards.  But not much of a traveling streem here.  All Philipiones on vacation.

I was reading in the upstairs restaurant while Jing was getting a massage when the local news started.  Top story was Alex Baldwin.  I guess he made a joke on Letterman about still being single and desperate enough to order a Philipino mail order bride.   The news was up in arms calling him a women abusier.  I was like it is a joke everyone.  Later that night Jing and I were reading on our porch before bed and the guy next to us was there with his Philipino girlfriend and he had two more "local girls" come to the room.  Jing asked what were they doing there and I said I think they need two more to play hearts.  :)  I then asked Jing if we could have them over tomorrow night but Jing was not on board with that idea. :)

Rebooked out tickets out of here 3 days sooner to get to nicer beach.  At the airport we confirmed the deal with the attendant helping us.  Then he asked for my card to pay.  He took it then sat at his pc and clicked away for like 15 minutes.  THEN he started processing our transaction.  i think he was completing his game of soliatre.   Then he got out a pen and paper and was totallying our transaction by hand.  Dude, that thing you were playing soliatre on is a computer you no longer need to carry the one.   Everyone goes at a sloooooooow pace here.

Jing talking to locals.  She always tell me to talk with people on transaction even though she speaks Tagalog and I don't.  Funny langauge.  Every fith word is Spanish.

Went to the local beach today.  4 Philipino guys wanted to drink with us at our hut.  One guy was really drunk and annoying, kept saying the same stuff over and over and then a loud female came running over and loudly said something.   Too bad 2 of the guys were nice and would have been good to talk to but it was not possilbe.

No stomach problems yet, koock on wood.

Traveling...I really enjoy travelling and getting to see different cultures and have new experiences.  I can't imagine traveling to places to just go to sterilized club meds.  It does not always work out but getting to meet local people in the world is great fun and try local food and I hope to be able to keep traveling in the future and not just vacation in the Carribean.

    Manila

We asked the hostel where  to get the best local food.  They said mall food court so that was our dinner.   4 dinners all for about a buck.  All the places so far have had armed gaurds at the door.   Bank in last city before Jing's village had gaurds with machine guns.  Food court in Manila had a gaurd with a Tommy gun, a literal Tommy gun for christ sake.  Jing went to get a facial and I went to the bar to watch the Celtics sadly get blown out of game 7. :(  In the bar only two local working girls tried to pick me up and in the street the only drug dealer to approach me was for viagara.  I'm getting old.

    Flys on me

After the trip fnally ended we got to this basic house in the mountains.  I needed a bathroom break and a shower in the worst of ways.  Dropped off bags and went to the indoor bathroom.  Did not test flush it before using it.  Ut oh, flush did not work.  I had no idea what to do then Jing knocked on the door to check on me.  I told her the flush did not and she told me to fill the bucket in the shower and dump it in the toilet.  Manuel flush.  Now the shower...dumping water over your head from the bucket.  Cold water but did not care.

Jing's parents village was remote, humid, and hot.  And without an ocean breeze.  And there were flys everwhere, always on you.  Time stood still.  We were cooking 3 pigs for our arrival.  At 3 AM jing covered my ears as the first pig was killed.  at 5 AM i woke up to see the pig roasting and the next pig get killed. (I will have some interesting facebook video on this) Now it was 8 AM and it felt like 4 PM.  Just sitting there sweating with fly on me time crawled.  At least my shakey leg now had a purpose.  In the  it was worth it.  The food was great and I don't see how Jing's grandma could have made the trip without Jing helping.

Other quick notes.   Beer was warm.  Gave candy to all the village kids.  Got to take a bike out for a ride with Jing, it was a 125 and no clutch and the shift clicked down instead of up but was fun.  90% of signage is in English even though people do not speak it.  Strange place.

Next day up at 5 Am time to go.  To the town's bus stop.  And wait, and wait.  Every bus that came through was for a place called Carmen.  Jing said that was not our bus.  In 1.5 hours 47 buses came for Carmen and 3 for Manila but they were full.  After I was giving Jing some serious stink eye her cousin shows up and basically says dumd ass, take the bus to Carmen and then get a Manila bus there.  Ugg, now a 10 hours bus ride.   Finally Manila, back in the traveling stream and flushing toilets.

    Power Blog

I have a bit of time now to blog, but there is much to type so I will power blog so forgive the typos and grammer.

Landed in Manila and Jing's Dad's friends and cousins met us.   We were travleing with 8 boxes of items for Jing's mom's store in their village.  It took 4 guys 35 minutes to load 8 boxes into a pickup which should have taken 5 minutes.  They would talk then stare at the boxes, the jossel them, talk some more, stare some.   At first it was annoying, then it was just bewilderment.  We finally got going after 15 hours of air travel.  Then we stopped to eat.  then we stopped to fix the boxes, then we stopped to get directions, then we stopped for I do not know why, then we stopped again 2 hours later to eat again.  5 stops in two hours.   The car ride ended up taking 10 hours and in all it was 30 hours from leaving the house to getting to the village.  And this turns out to be the easier of the legs.

btw, in this cafe it is me and Jing and 8 locals all playing WOW.

    In Manila

Well it is late, I need to catch up many many stories but it will not be tonight.  A few brutal days of travel and tomorrow is an early plane fight, I just wanted to check in. Hi.  Days and days without Survivor and Brett Farve updates to the Vikings has me missing internet.  I have 15 mins. to type.  btw, the 3rd movie on the plane was Marley, I cried for the 3rd time I watched it.  And over seas stweardess are top flight jobs that only hire hot chicks so that is what I meant by models cheering.  Mistakes so far, forgot the the hoddy on the plane, I forgot the USB for the camera, you will have to do deal with my prose to paint your pictures, forgot bar soap, razor, wash cloth, which was fixable here in Manila, except for USB. And we forgot OFF (insect replent) which for the first time we really really really needed.  More on that later...

    Screen is in Korean

    Hope this makes it.
Everything is in Korean.  I'm typing drinking my 11,000 (5$)Won Heineken.
    Day was an adventure.
Jing's mom held up the line at security n Seattle for 30 mins.
Watched 4 movies on the plane....Grand Torino, Bolt, forgot, Twilight.
Forgot iPod on the plane.  Jing remebers after we pass the H1V1 check point without them checking me.
I go back and we tear up the seats.  Literally.  No ipod.  Check with Jing again any she no have it.  back again to the plane past the swine flu check point which i walk through cause now we are buddies...this time find the ipod. :)
The modle stewardress cheer me on exiting the plane cause I have my iPod.
Now to bar and Jing tells me opps...you forgot your hoody on the plane. :)
Jing now says time to go...no proof read.
